Silent walk in memory of 38-year-old robbery murder victim

--

Family, friends, local residents and other interested parties participated in a silent walk on Tuesday, April 23, in memory of 38-year-old Riaaz Kadir. He died on Friday, April 19, during a robbery in his home on Pierpontweg.

Riaaz is one of the many victims of robbery during a period when there is a rising trend of robbery with violence in Suriname. The robbery was committed by two men who entered the house. Riaaz’s mother was overwhelmed by the men and managed to call for help. Riaaz, who was at home with his family, responded to the screams and got into a struggle with the men during which he was stabbed in the back with a knife.

The silent run with a total distance of 3.12 km, which took place on Tuesday afternoon around 5 p.m., was organized by friends and local residents of the victim. In doing so, they draw attention to the brutality of crime.

“We cannot continue to accept such brutal murders,” said a sentence from the appeal posted on social media on April 21. The meeting place was at the OS Dijkveld on the Pierpontweg. From there we walked towards the Sir Winston Churchillweg, then turned left towards the Bosch Reitzweg, then left onto the Martin Luther Kingweg and back onto the Pierpontweg, with the deceased’s home address as final destination.

There, friends, local residents and relatives present laid flowers and candles under a tree (photo), where Riaaz used to sit. The turnout was quite large and the participants were guided by 11 neighborhood managers from the various districts of Paramaribo, Wanica and Commewijne.

The suspects in Riaaz’s murder are still on the run. According to the Surinamese police, efforts are being made to track down and arrest them. The investigation into this case has been transferred to the Capital Crimes Unit.
