A month after Canadian Faraj Jarjour died of a heart attack while on holiday in Cuba with his family, his family is still searching for his body. The remains that were sent back to his family in Canada turned out not to be his.

The Canadian family from Laval, near Quebec, was sitting on the beach at their resort in Varadero, Cuba, when their 68-year-old father went into cardiac arrest. There was no doctor around and the family had to wait an hour and a half for medical help to arrive. The man did not survive that waiting period. After the man was declared dead, they had to wait another seven hours for Jarjour’s body to be taken to the nearest mortuary in Havana.

Wrong body recovered

A month later, the family still has not received the body and has therefore not yet been able to bury their father. What’s more, they got another man’s body back.

It’s a tragedy in their home

In Cuba, the family was advised to contact the Canadian embassy, which referred them to the authorities in Canada itself. They would take charge of transporting the body. The family paid transport costs of around 7,000 euros, but were not told for weeks about the whereabouts of their father’s body. Finally they got news: his remains would arrive on April 18.

Russian man

But when the funeral home in Laval, Canada took the coffin to a laboratory, the person inside the coffin turned out not to be Faraj Jarjour. They found a man with a full head of hair and tattoos who looked at least 20 years younger. According to the BBC, the Russian consulate has now confirmed that this man has Russian nationality.

The body of the unknown Russian is still in Canada and the body of Faraj Jarjour is still missing.

‘Cuba responsible’

Canada says Cuba is responsible for the mistake. This is according to Global Affairs Canada, which manages Canada’s diplomatic relations. “It is the local funeral home that handles all aspects of a foreigner’s death in Cuba, including embalming, booking flights, delivering the remains to the airline and communicating shipping details,” the organization said. BBC.

The search for the body is now continuing. The Canadian funeral home contacted the Cuban company responsible for delivering the remains. It is also possible that Jarjour’s body was sent to Russia.
