with mapIt’s time for the ribbon rain again! Today, thousands of Dutch people receive a royal decoration. But who gets a ribbon? And why? In this article you will find a map with an overview of our region from 1 p.m.

In total there are about a hundred types of recognized awards in the Netherlands. Traditionally, the mayors award these ribbons during the ribbon rain. Such an award is a medal worn on a ribbon. Hence ‘the ribbon’.

The ribbon shower is always on the last working day before the king’s birthday. It is unknown when the very first ribbon rain in the Netherlands took place. This tradition probably started somewhere in the mid-nineteenth century.

From 1 p.m Below you can see who received a ribbon in your municipality.

When will you get a ribbon?

There are no strict criteria for a Royal award. In any case, someone must have ‘made a contribution to society in a special or exceptional way’. These often concern people who have been active as volunteers for a long time – at least fifteen years – for example at a sports club or in church. Another category consists of people who have achieved ‘very special achievements’ in their daily work or secondary position. Consider, for example, athletes who have become Olympic champions.

More common in the south

When looking at the ‘ribbon map’ of the Netherlands, one thing is immediately noticeable: significantly more awards are presented south of the Rotterdam-Emmen line than north of it.

That has everything to do with church and association life in that half of the Netherlands, says Peter Rehwinkel, mayor for almost uninterrupted years for twenty years and responsible for the presentation of hundreds of ribbons. “And certainly in church circles, there is more of an idea that after so many years as a volunteer, you are eligible for a ribbon.”
