Europe has been suffering from overconfidence for more than 30 years, says Rob de Wijk in his latest book The new Iron Curtain. A painful reality that we have been confronted with harshly by the war in Ukraine.
As the winner of the Cold War, Europe considered its economic system and democratic and humanitarian values superior to those of other countries. Centuries of power politics therefore made way for an idealistic foreign policy, in which defense was increasingly stripped down. We were presented with the bill for this thinking on February 24, 2022, when Russia invaded Ukraine.
It turned out that power politics had not disappeared after all. Nor was the military threat to Europe, which could no longer defend itself. The price of 30 years of military neglect, moral politics and overconfidence is high. We are heading for a permanent confrontation with Russia, a new Cold War and a new Iron Curtain. But not all is lost, Rob de Wijk concludes in his new book.
