BARNEVELD Today, the center of Barneveld is traditionally buzzing with orange festive cheer. This is the day of unique finds at the flea market and dancing to golden oldies on the Raadhuisplein. I always think too late about finding a suitable outfit. I just make the best of what is still in the cupboard. This creates the most regal creation, but one that suits the occasion.

I also pull out all the stops for anyone who wants to serve something tasty last minute. Today a sparkling recipe, with orange ingredients that you probably already have at home. Some patience is required, the orange granita needs some attention and a few hours in the freezer. That’s nice for anyone who prefers to avoid the hustle and bustle today. Stir the frozen mass every half hour with a fork to form beautiful ice crystals. In a metal baking dish, the granita will freeze faster with an even result. A refreshing end to a beautiful King’s Day.

Don’t worry, people who like to plan ahead have also been taken into account. Because this granita with orange bitters or orange liqueur will certainly increase the atmosphere on May 5.

How are you?
Orange granita
4 persons
150 g (cane) sugar
3 limes, zest, juice or 1 grapefruit
2 oranges, zest, juice
1 cinnamon stick
200 ml sparkling mineral water
250 ml orange bitters or orange liqueur (alc. free: orange lemonade)

Heat a pan with 200 ml tap water and dissolve the sugar in it. Mix in the lime zest and 2 tbsp orange zest. Add the cinnamon stick and let it steep over low heat for 5 minutes.
Then add the lime juice, orange juice and mineral water. Add the orange bitters or orange liqueur. Remove the cinnamon stick.
Pour the mixture into a (metal) bowl and place in the freezer. Scrape the frozen mixture with a fork every half hour. Repeat this 5 times so that the sugar water turns into fluffy ice chips. Cover and store in the freezer until ready to use.
Divide the orange granita among 4 cocktail glasses, garnish with fresh mint or an orange segment.
TIP: Save the peels of the squeezed oranges and serve the granita in them.
