Xbox announces significant changes for developers

Xbox promises major changes to make developing for the platform easier

Scott Van Vliet, the CTO of Xbox, has confirmed via X (formerly Twitter) that more changes are on the way to facilitate development on the platform. While numerous positive changes for developers have already been implemented, Van Vliet indicates that the company is actively working to remove further obstacles.

“We have heard the feedback from developers: it needs to be easier to bring a game to XBOX than it is today. We agree and are working to make it better. We care deeply about ID@XBOX and the developers building for XBOX. We are starting with some areas we know can cause unnecessary friction, including our concept and publication processes, and we are simplifying these so developers can spend less time navigating processes and more time bringing great games to players. More soon.”

It is encouraging to see Xbox addressing developers directly. Although it remains vague what exactly will change and not many details are provided beyond simplifying the concept and publication processes, it is still nice to have this acknowledgment made publicly.

Recent Developments in Game Development

Not long ago, I was quite excited about the changes implemented at PlayFab, especially with the introduction of Foundation Mode. This offers developers free access to backend services, including infrastructure for multiplayer lobbies and other essential features.

Improving the Onboarding Process

At the same time, Microsoft has expressed confidence that developers can now start working in the Xbox development environment in about 30 minutes, making the onboarding process significantly easier than before.

For people like me, and you, it may not mean much if you are just playing games. But for developers, Xbox is taking serious steps to lower as many barriers as possible. Perhaps in the future, skipping Xbox will no longer be an option? Who knows?

Hopefully, we will hear more soon about the specific changes Van Vliet refers to. Although I am not particularly technically skilled in game development, I enjoy experimenting here and there, and as an Xbox fan, it is exciting that more developers may see the platform as a viable option in the future.
