The government of the American city of Baltimore is suing the owners of the ship Dali. A bridge near the city almost completely collapsed last month after the ship hit it. Six people were killed.

The city says the ship was “clearly unseaworthy” when it left the Port of Baltimore. The city council accuses the owner of the Dali of negligence. The crew was also said to have been “incompetent”. The owner should be held fully liable for the bridge’s collapse, the city’s lawyers say.

Baltimore filed the legal documents in Maryland court. That state’s federal court will decide who was responsible for the collapse.

It was previously announced that the FBI is investigating the collision. The security service is investigating whether the crew of the Dali knew before departure that the cargo ship had serious technical problems. Investigators have seized a data recorder from the ship. It contains information about the position, speed and communication of the ship.

Six people were killed when the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed on March 26. They were working on the road that crossed the bridge at the time.
