On Friday, May 3, the Santodorp police received information that a minor child was being systematically abused by a woman and her husband in a home on Poeraiweg in Suriname.
The assault was captured in a video shown to police. The footage shows a woman abusing a child to such an extent that the child falls to the ground. Also that the youth has a gaping wound on the left upper leg.
After processing the information obtained, 22-year-old Lowinsa F. was arrested at the above-mentioned address in Ephraimszegen, being the woman hitting the child in the video.
The child Devrissa F. who is 2 years old was also found at the address and recognized as the one being beaten in the video and showing various injuries such as a gaping wound on the left thigh, blisters and burn scars all over the body.
When questioned, the mother stated that she hit her daughter out of anger because she is not toilet trained and poops everywhere in the house.
The mother was taken into custody on Saturday, May 4, after consultation with the Surinamese Public Prosecution Service for serious abuse. The stepfather, who is also an accomplice, is still on the run. Police are working on his arrest.
The 2-year-old has been admitted to the Paramaribo University Hospital for observation. The investigation continues.
