The elections in North Macedonia were won by the right-wing nationalist opposition party VMRO-DPMNE. The ruling pro-European Social Democrats have acknowledged their losses in both the parliamentary and presidential elections. As a result, accession to the European Union may be at risk.
During the campaign, the VMRO-DPMNE announced that it would confront EU member states and neighboring countries Bulgaria and Greece. For example, party leader Hristijan Mickoski does not recognize the country’s name change. In 2018, the government in Skopje decided at Greek request to add ‘North’ to the name of the country.
70-year-old Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova is the new president of North Macedonia. Mickoski will probably become the new prime minister. He has also promised to take tougher action against Bulgarian demands. Sofia wants North Macedonia to amend the constitution to protect the Bulgarian minority. Mickoski also attacked the country’s Albanian minority during the campaign.
North Macedonia is a candidate country for the EU and is conducting accession talks after they were blocked for years by Greece and Bulgaria. The Social Democrats warned that a VMRO-DPMNE victory would endanger its membership.
