Search: you don’t have to use it. I haven’t used it for years and there isn’t anything I can’t find. I’ve been using Duckduckgo for years.

Gmail: you don’t have to use it. Plenty of free alternatives, although you may wonder what they do with your data. That is why I have had a paid mail service for years

Maps: you don’t have to use them. Plenty of free alternatives. The only thing you miss in some cases is traffic information. I have been using Sygic for years (with traffic).

Pay: you don’t have to use it, you can also pay contactless with your debit card.

Android: you don’t have to use it. Apple is a more expensive (and not necessarily better) alternative. For an alternative ROM you need a little more technical knowledge, so it is indeed a bit more difficult to avoid.

Only for the last one you have to know what you are doing, the rest any layman can do with just a little bit of will.

The biggest difficulty is still realizing that you are handing over all your data without batting an eyelid. Would you have the same attitude if all that data were given to your neighbor? Or if someone is constantly looking over your shoulder?

Apparently, for many people, the effort they take to protect their privacy is inversely proportional to the distance from the recipient of that data.
