Xiaomi has presented its first electric car, the SU7, in its home country of China. With the model, which costs just under 28,000 euros, the smartphone maker is further increasing the pressure on the sector and wants to compete with Tesla. A fierce price war is raging in China among electric car manufacturers.

The entry-level SU7 is cheaper in China than the Tesla Model 3, while the car’s dimensions are close to larger electric models, such as the Model S and the Porsche Taycan. Xiaomi markets the SU7 in three model variants (Standard, Pro and Max). The smartphone maker promises a range ‘up to 830 kilometers’, although calculated based on the Chinese test cycle.

Fierce battle

For the time being, the car is only available in China. A fierce battle in the EV field is raging in the country. Tesla lowered its prices several times to boost model sales.

Xiaomi recorded 50,000 pre-orders for the SU7 within 27 minutes. The first copies will be delivered soon. An SUV may follow later this year.
