Many Frisians were shocked on Friday by a message on the Omrin waste app: the gray containers are being replaced by much smaller ones.

‘This summer we are taking the next step towards 0 kilos of residual waste. That is why our residents will receive a new gray bin (sorti bin), which is half the size of the bin they currently have,” the waste company reported on the app and also on your own website.

Heated reactions

This led to heated reactions, especially in Leeuwarden. This newspaper was frequently approached about it. Since last year, people have had to pay 1 euro every time they put the gray bin at the roadside. As the containers become smaller, they fill up faster.

Then they are more often at the roadside and this costs residents extra money. Garbage trucks also have to drive more often: this does not seem to be good for the environment. Omrin previously made an end to large green bins : not everyone was happy with this either.

Politically sensitive

Such an intervention is possible politically very sensitive . The current diftar system has led to fierce debates in Leeuwarden and a number of other Frisian municipalities in recent years.

It is therefore highly remarkable that the new measure is being introduced without municipal council discussion. This newspaper therefore called the municipality of Leeuwarden.

She has indeed not placed an order for smaller containers, the press office said on Friday. Omrin’s report therefore anticipates April 1.
