The Omloop van het Waasland has a turbulent history, that’s for sure. The price had to make a lot of effort to get back to the 1.2 level, but that’s where it is now. CyclingFlits takes you into history.

For the first edition of the Omloop van het Waasland we have to go back to 1965. The Dutchman Marinus van Ginneken defeated the Belgian home riders at the time. A year later it was Rik Wouters who once again gave the Dutchman the victory. In 1967, for the first time, a Belgian was able to triumph with Martin Van Den Bossche. The Belgians and Dutch cheered by far the most in the Waasland, although the Belgians won by a street lead.

The Omloop van het Waasland, which was founded by a local mayor, was a low-level race for a long time. Between 2005 and 2016 they were promoted to the 1.2 level and were part of the UCI Europe Tour. They lost that status again, but in 2024 they were promoted again. A turbulent history. The record winner is Belgian Niko Eeckhout, who won three times.
