A group of about two hundred artists is calling on tech companies not to train AI models with copyrighted music. The artists are mainly from the United States and see AI as a threat to their income.

The artists, who have gathered under the Artists Rights Alliance, want tech companies not to create tools that can replace human work in music, as this would negatively impact their revenues. The massive amount of AI-generated “sounds” and “visuals” could significantly reduce the royalties artists receive.

Not all artists who signed the call are known in the Netherlands. The heirs of artists such as Bob Marley and Frank Sinatra, among others, have signed the call. Other artists joining the Artists Rights Alliance include Billie Eilish, Calum Scott, Camila Cabello, Elvis Costello, Imagine Dragons, Jon Bon Jovi, Jonas Brothers, Katy Perry, Mumford & Sons, Nicki Minaj, Norah Jones, Pearl Jam, REM, Sam Smith and Zayn Malik.

Various companies behind AI models train their models with data taken from the internet, without prior permission being requested. It remains to be seen whether this is legally allowed for much longer, but in many cases the damage has already been done. Many existing texts and songs have already been used for AI training purposes.
