Former American senator Joe Lieberman died on Wednesday at the age of 82, American media report based on a statement from his family. The Democrat rose to national fame as a vice presidential candidate alongside Al Gore in 2000.

Lieberman represented the state of Connecticut as a senator for almost a quarter of a century. He then came into the spotlight as Gore’s so-called running mate. Lieberman was the first Jewish candidate for vice president in the United States at the time.

“It was an honor to run for president side by side with him,” Gore responded to Lieberman’s death.

Lieberman caused a stir by not always following the party line. For example, in 2008 he supported Republican presidential candidate John McCain, who competed against the later winner Barack Obama that year. From 2006 he worked as an independent senator.

Lieberman was also the founder of No Labels, a group for the political center. This movement hopes to attract and bring together Americans who do not feel at home with the Democrats or Republicans.
