Galecopper Bridge near Utrecht closed for three days in the direction of Arnhem in April

The Galecopper Bridge near Utrecht was closed to traffic in the direction of Arnhem for three days during the day in April. On Saturday 6, Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 April, traffic cannot cross the bridge between 8:00 AM and 10:00 PM. The Papendorpseweg, the road under the bridge, will also be closed to car and bicycle traffic.

Rijkswaterstaat is carrying out major maintenance on the Galecopper Bridge, which is located on the A12, until mid-2025. Heavy car and freight traffic has placed increasing strain on the bridge in recent decades, requiring maintenance. There is also rust formation on the steel cables that support the bridge deck on the bridge towards Arnhem.

During the closures in April, Rijkswaterstaat will install a new construction on one of the towers of the Galecopper Bridge towards Arnhem. Pipes are also attached between the bridge deck and the new construction. The new steel cables will run through this later this year.

Completely enclosed

Due to maintenance work, the Galecopper Bridge will be completely closed in the direction of Arnhem on April 6, 13 and 14 from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. According to Rijkswaterstaat, road users who have to go to Arnhem must take into account an hour’s delay. The Papendorpseweg is closed on April 6 from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. and from April 13 from 6 a.m. to April 14 at 8 p.m. This closure applies to car traffic and cyclists.

Traffic from Amsterdam to Arnhem will be diverted via the A1 and A27/A30 and from Rotterdam to Arnhem via the A15. At Utrecht, traffic detours via the N230 (Northern Randweg Utrecht) and the A27 or the A2 and A27. Local traffic is diverted locally and cyclists must take a detour via the Galecopperdijk.

Big projects

This year, Rijkswaterstaat is working on several major maintenance projects around Utrecht. Rijkswaterstaat already indicated earlier this month expect a lot of inconvenience. “Take the train or cycle,” was the advice at the time.
