GRONINGEN CELEBRATES TRANSGENDER DAY OF VISIBILITY WITH A VERSATILE EVENT

GRONINGEN – On March 30, 2024 at 1:30 PM, Transgender Day of Visibility Groningen will take place for the second time: a gathering on the Grote Markt to celebrate transgender people and create awareness about the discrimination they face. The event includes speeches, poetry readings and live music.

Transgender Day of Visibility is an international day on which worldwide attention is drawn to transgender people. Last year the initiative arose to also organize something on this day in Groningen. After a successful first edition, there will be another event this year. Through speeches, poetry readings and live music, various (transgender) people share what it means to them to be transgender. Money will also be raised for LGBT Asylum Support (an organization that supports LGBTIQ+ asylum seekers) and a minute’s silence will be held for all transgender people who died due to violence.

The municipality of Groningen also recognizes the importance of this day and hoists the 30^e the transgender flag on the Martini Tower. An important signal to the transgender community: “It is moving and encouraging to see the flag flying that day and to know that we are not alone as a community,” says Mari Pool (organization Transgender Day of Visibility Groningen). Because support and acceptance are still not self-evident for many transgender people. They often face discrimination, intimidation and violence. For example, the number of reports of discrimination against this group has doubled in the past two years. Mari: “On Saturday we celebrate the beautiful things about being trans and we discuss the things that could and should be improved.”

The event starts at 1:30 PM on the Grote Markt in Groningen and lasts until approximately 4:00 PM. Do you not want to be photographed during the event?
