The area surrounding the Stadshart shopping center in Amstelveen was cordoned off on Thursday afternoon because a man was said to be carrying a suspicious package on a bus. A 67-year-old man from The Hague has been arrested. It turned out that he was not carrying an explosive. The police are investigating what he did have with him.
The police received a report around 1 p.m. that someone with a suspicious package had boarded a Connexxion bus at Schiphol. Several specialist units were deployed, including an arrest team, a member of the Explosives Safety team of the Royal Military Police and a police helicopter that kept a close eye on the bus.
The police eventually stopped the bus at a bus station on Meander street in Amstelveen. The area around the bus station was cordoned off and officers removed all occupants from the bus. The suspect was immediately arrested based on the description of the report. It turned out that he was not carrying an explosive.
The area surrounding the shopping center was reopened around 3:30 p.m. The police are still investigating what exactly the suspect had with him.
