A wolf was spotted and filmed this afternoon on the edge of a residential area in Eelde.

It is unknown what kind of wolf it is. “They don’t have a name tag on,” says Glenn Lelieveld of the Wolf Reporting Center. According to Lelieveld, it has happened at least ten times that a wolf has walked into inhabited areas in the Netherlands.

“You see that a one-year-old or two-year-old wolf from an established pack sometimes looks for its own habitat. You see these kinds of videos of wolves in inhabited areas everywhere, such as in Eastern Europe and Germany,” says Hans Hasper, coordinator of the Drenthe Wolf Reporting Point.

The video shows a runner turning left and the wolf turning right. There are images of a wolf chasing cyclists in the Veluwe and experiences of cyclists and riders being chased by a wolf are also known in Drenthe. “This wolf is clearly not out to play. He wants to flee,” Hasper said.

Lelieveld says that a fleeing wolf walks away in phases. “A fleeing deer is immediately tens of meters away. But a wolf walks, stands still, observes and walks a bit again. Stands still, observes, etc.”

According to Hasper and Lelieveld, there was no potential danger. “The wolf moves away from people. And that is what you want in such a case,” says Hasper.

They advise not to chase a wolf. “He must be able to find his way. If you chase the wolf, you chase the animal and it is more difficult for him to run away. Put it on screen and give the wolf the opportunity to find its way,” says Hasper.
