A 19-year-old man from De Meern in Utrecht has been convicted of attempted manslaughter of his mother. During a fight, both people used a knife and the judge ruled that the suspect defended himself, but that he went too far. The young man, who was a minor during the incident, was sentenced to one year of juvenile detention.

The suspect stated that on June 24, 2022, his mother walked towards him angry and screaming with a knife. The young man then also grabbed a knife and a fight ensued in which the woman was seriously injured. “The court finds this scenario outlined by the boy plausible and, contrary to the view of the public prosecutor, speaks of an emergency situation in which the boy was allowed to defend himself,” the court said.

The judge ruled that the suspect had gone too far. At one point when he grabbed his mother’s wrist, she dropped the knife and he decided not to stop stabbing. “At that moment it was not necessary for him to defend himself by insisting on his mother. He thus exceeded the limits of the necessary defense and continued too long and violently.”

The suspect was therefore convicted of attempted manslaughter. He gets one year of juvenile detention, but 201 days of that are conditional. He has already served the other 164 days in pre-trial detention. That means he doesn’t have to go back to prison. Finally, he also received a contact ban with his mother and an area ban.
