During heart failure week, the UMCG organizes a symposium on heart failure. This special public academy is free.

Activities will be organized throughout the country from April 22 to 28 during National Heart Failure Week.

Heart failure is a serious disease in which the heart continues to deteriorate without treatment.

Recognize early

“Heart failure occurs at all ages. It is important to recognize the disease early in order to start treatment on time,” says Jozine ter Maaten, doctor at the UMCG and closely involved in National Heart Failure Week. Few people know what heart failure is. The doctor, together with college students, urges more research and awareness.

Common complaints include shortness of breath, fatigue, and swollen ankles or feet due to fluid retention. “Research by the Heart Foundation shows that people do not always take these complaints seriously, they quickly blame it on stress or age. As a result, they go to a doctor too late or not at all.”

Symposium

Various lectures can be attended during the symposium, including those by a cardiologist and patient. A researcher talks about research and its usefulness. In addition, there are various stands and screens showing the different stages of the disease.

The public academy is free and registration is not required. For the entire program, see the UMCG website.
