At the intersection between Vijzelstraat and Prinsengracht, Statiegeld Nederland (part of Verpact), the foundation responsible for the deposit system, is launching the ‘Holle Dolle Donnie’ on King’s Day. A return point for deposit packaging to keep cans and bottles out of the canals.

Deposit Netherlands wants to emphasize the benefits of returning cans, plastic bottles and bottles. They do this by introducing Dutch people to returning deposit packaging in a fun way. Jeroen Hillen, director at Statiegeld Nederland, explains: “According to research, the environment and money are important motivations for consumers to return bottles and cans. Especially on King’s Day, many bottles and cans still end up in the trash, or, even worse, in the canals and on the street. That is why we want to make Dutch people aware of the importance of handing in cans and bottles in a light-hearted way with this activation.”

Track by rapper Donnie

The tunnel is decorated as a large deposit donation box where passers-by can hand in their packaging. The proceeds from the deposit packaging are donated to charity: a foundation for the homeless. When returning the deposit packaging, Donnie’s specially developed track in collaboration with Statiegeld Nederland is played. The number summarizes the obstacles and usage moments surrounding deposits. The Holle Dolle Donnie tunnel will be accessible to both boaters and pedestrians on April 27.

Campaign

The Holle Dolle Donnie tunnel is part of a larger campaign by Statiegeld Nederland. With the campaign, the foundation focuses on behavioral change. The goal is to motivate and activate Dutch people to hand in their deposit packaging in order to take back 90% of all cans and plastic beverage bottles.
