A parked camper in the street in Amsterdam-Noord

The municipality of Amsterdam will place signs in a street in Amsterdam-Noord to prevent campers from breaking the rules. This concerns part of the Meeuwenlaan, a street of almost 2 kilometers long.

Residents complain to AT5 and NH that the street has become a popular camping spot. For example, during weekends and school holidays, around seven campers of Europeans on holiday are parked every day. Parking is allowed, but according to residents, a number of people sleep in the camper and that is not allowed. In addition, people sometimes urinate on the side of campers and people defecate in bushes.

One of the residents knows why this street is popular. “It’s nice and central, close to the ferry. You can go straight to the center. So of course I understand that.”

It is not known how many camper owners park alone in the street and how many of them stay overnight. However, according to residents, the latter occurs regularly. “I can’t keep up anymore,” someone says. Recently two campers showed up at her door. “There was a whole family in there. I think they slept in it.”

There is also noise pollution. “They also rev the engines and it is noisy here, so you hear it very loudly.”

A resident spotted the first campers of the ‘camping season’ in Amsterdam North two weeks ago.

The municipality and the local police officer are aware of the problem. A spokesperson says that enforcement officers regularly turn campers away and that signs are therefore being installed explaining the rules.
