Basic-Fit saw the number of sports subscriptions increase by 251,000 to almost 4.1 million. The company opened more than a hundred new branches. The company now has more than 1,500 branches in six different countries.

Basic-Fit has been growing rapidly, especially outside the Netherlands. The number of clubs in France increased from 781 at the end of last year to 814 at the end of March. And in Spain the number of locations increased by 60 to 199 in the first quarter. In the Netherlands, the counter stood at 240 locations at the end of March. That was only three more than three months earlier.

Discounts

The Ramadan period, which largely fell in March this year, did have a negative impact on customer growth. Furthermore, the company’s promotional strategy change last year resulted in slightly more subscriber turnover. Now the company is trying to entice people to go to the gym with more discounts. Basic-Fit previously stunted more with an offer to exercise for free for a number of weeks, which slightly extended the duration of subscriptions.

But the chain also notices that more and more customers are switching to a premium subscription, which allows them, for example, to use massage chairs in the clubs. On average, all subscriptions yield slightly more money. Basic-Fit saw its quarterly turnover increase by 16 percent compared to a year ago, to 284 million euros.

The company expects to open more new locations during the rest of this year. The number of locations should therefore be around 1,575 by the end of the year. The company, which is not currently releasing profit figures, is also counting on a further increase in revenues.
