Mayor Caroline van de Pol of Terschelling has submitted her resignation to the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations. She wants to stop on August 1. According to the province, the decision was ‘made in joint consultation and with the consent of the Terschelling council’.

Caroline van de Pol has been at home for a long time. At the end of last year, she was granted leave until March 28. At the time, the thought was that she would be installed as mayor of Castricum on that day. However, Van de Pol still decided to quit her new job for health reasons. In the meantime, Roel Cazemier had been appointed as acting mayor for Terschelling.

On Terschelling there has been rumblings between the mayor, aldermen and the municipal council for some time. At the end of December, Van de Pol left the municipal council in amazement when she announced that she would become mayor of Castricum. Even before that, relations were already tense. Van de Pol has been mayor of the island since 2020.

‘Hope for a return of peace and balance’

Commissioner Van de Koning Brok stated in a press release that he respects Van de Pol’s decision. ‘I hope that this step contributes to the return of peace and balance. This is necessary with a view to the future of the island. I thank the mayor for her involvement and commitment to Terschelling’.

Minister of the Interior Hugo de Jonge has yet to officially approve the resignation request, because the mayor is appointed by the crown.
