The Public Prosecution Service does not think it is a good idea if municipalities can install speed cameras themselves. Utrecht recently made a call to allow this. If municipalities are allowed to decide this themselves, the Public Prosecution Service fears proliferation.

It is a frequently asked question on roads where people regularly drive too fast: why are no speed cameras installed? The municipality cannot now decide this independently. The Public Prosecution Service is the owner of speed cameras in the Netherlands and decides whether or not they will be installed. Utrecht can only submit a request to the justice department.

The municipality of Utrecht wrote one last month, together with Rotterdam, Amsterdam and The Hague letter containing the call to change this. There should be municipal speed cameras. The Public Prosecution Service recently announced that it will maintain its current position and therefore advise against the cities’ initiative.

Delusion of the day

The Public Prosecution Service applies fixed rules so that a nationally uniform approach applies. This should also prevent so-called ‘political posts’ from being placed; Speed cameras that are installed due to the madness of the day without meeting the criteria or even being used only as a source of income.

Installing a speed camera should also be a last resort. First it must be examined whether road users can adjust their behavior in a different way, for example by designing the road differently.
