Gea Mulder from Havelte has been voted Language Hero of Drenthe. That is quite special, because she had difficulty reading and writing for years. by René Karst, ambassador of the Reading and Writing Foundation, surprised her with the title in the library in Havelte.

To improve her language skills, Gea is taking a course. Her Language Supervisor nominated her for the Language Heroes Award.

“I used to be bullied because I had trouble reading and writing. That’s why I took language lessons. There I learned that I don’t have to be ashamed if I don’t read and write that fast. Ultimately, I wrote a book myself,” says Gea Mulder.

In the Netherlands, thousands of people take the step to learn to read and write better later in life. To be able to participate again in the labor market and in society. They can inspire others with their stories. That is why the Reading and Writing Foundation awards the annual Language Heroes Award.

National title

Together with nine other Dutch people, Gea now has a chance to win the national title Language Hero 2024. Princess Laurentien, founder of the Reading and Writing Foundation, will award the Language Heroes Prize in June. There is also an audience award. Everyone can vote for Gea or one of the other nominees. This can be done on the website www.taalheld.nl.
