Two Dutch people were killed in a bus accident in Ecuador yesterday. They are a 74-year-old woman from Haarlem and a 73-year-old man from Hilversum. Twelve Dutch passengers were injured and taken to hospital. This is confirmed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The injured Dutch are between 41 and 75 years old. Two injured people are in critical condition, the director of the hospital in the city of Tena reported. An Ecuadorian was also injured.

Local media report that the bus driver probably lost control and then collided with another bus. That happened near a bridge. Photos show that the tourist bus is tilted on the road.

According to the newspaper El Universo, it took an hour for emergency services to arrive. Other drivers are said to have helped to get passengers off the bus.

The Dutch made a group trip in Ecuador. There were a total of 21 Dutch tourists in the crashed bus. Eurocross emergency center has opened a special telephone number for those involved at the request of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
