Actor Jan Krol has died at the age of 60, reports RTV Drenthe. Krol is known for the popular television series Bartje, in which he played the leading role.

Krol died yesterday in a hospice after a short illness. The actor is buried in a private circle, his family asks for privacy.

As a 9-year-old boy, Krol played the role of Bartje Bartels in the popular TV series at the time Bart, of the NCRV. The series aired from December 1972. In the series you follow the life of the Bartels family, a poor working-class family from Drenthe. The family often ate brown beans, because they were cheap. The scene in which Bartje is served brown beans again and shouts ‘I don’t pray for brown beans,’ is one of the most famous scenes of the series. Bartje is based on the book by Anne de Vries and took place in 1922.

Following the series, a statue of Bartje was unveiled on September 4, 1954. It was a stone statue that was later vandalized by vandals. Shortly afterwards, a bronze statuette arrived, which was kidnapped a few times. Since then, the statue of Bartje can be viewed in Assen behind the Drents Museum.
