Tom Egbers and the NOS have reached an agreement in their dispute. The broadcaster reports that the presenter will return to television and will make “narrative programs and documentaries” for the broadcaster.

According to the NOS, these are “programs with some distance from daily sports news”. This includes series such as Toms England, Ireland and Scotland, which Egbers previously made at NTR. The presenter’s wish to present the European Football Championship one more time is therefore over.

“After a year in which a lot has been written, talked about and expressed opinions, it is good to get back to work,” Egbers said in a response. He says he has reflected on himself during the period he was at home due to allegations of misconduct.

“I find it very sad that there are colleagues who have felt unhappy on the work floor of NOS Sport, in a culture that I am also a part of. That in the eyes of younger colleagues I have a different position than just that of ‘a colleague’, I also did not realize it enough,” said the 66-year-old presenter.

Egbers and NOS face each other in court

Egbers and the NOS faced each other in court earlier this week. The presenter filed summary proceedings against his employer. The sports presenter wanted to return to work, but was denied airtime due to the accusations against him.

In the courtroom, the presenter and the NOS discussed whether and when a return to television was possible. The broadcaster said it “fears unrest” if the presenter returns. Egbers and the NOS were given until April 2 to reach an agreement. If that were not successful, the judge would make a ruling on April 16.

NOS Sport editor-in-chief Gert-Jaap Hoekman is happy that the broadcaster and the presenter have reached an agreement. He speaks of “good agreements about an appropriate continuation that does justice to his (Egbers, ed.) long career at the broadcaster”.

Egbers wants to end his career at NOS in ‘a dignified manner’

Egbers disappeared from television after de Volkskrant had published an article about misconduct in the editorial staff of NOS Sport in March 2023. Hundreds of cases of discrimination, (sexual) intimidation and bullying behavior are said to have occurred over a period of twenty years. Egbers was one of the names mentioned in the story.

The NOS lawyer stated during the summary proceedings that 28 reports of inappropriate behavior have been made against Egbers, but the presenter says he does not know exactly what the broadcaster means by that, who they come from and what their content is. “I was told that many of the reports are about one case, my affair sixteen years ago.”

The fact that the presenter has reached retirement age did not stop him from pursuing his case. Egbers absolutely wants to end his career at NOS in “a dignified manner”, the place where he has worked for forty years. He was supposed to say goodbye in October, but NOS has announced that Egbers’ new programs will be broadcast until early 2025. His employment has been extended to complete this work.

Egbers presented the program for decades Studio Sports. He was also seen as a presenter of Other Times Sports.
