Before the match against Excelsior, Ajax coach John van ‘t Schip announced that the training had been full of energy, based on the strong second half in the previous match against FC Twente. However, little of this was visible on the field on Wednesday evening. At the press conference after the draw, Van ‘t Schip tried to provide an explanation for the difference between training and match days.

In the Johan Cruijff Arena, Ajax took a lead, which was relinquished after a red card for captain Steven Bergwijn. In the final phase, Ajax came back to 2-2, but the fifth place of the Amsterdam team is currently under pressure. “It’s difficult to explain,” Van ‘t Schip sighed at the press moment after the match.

“We wanted to play in the same way, with the same energy as against FC Twente,” Van ‘t Schip continued. ‘It wasn’t the training. There was a good energy, but not much of it was visible.’ How does that happen? ‘It’s a young team, it probably has to do with the pressure. And the quality that may not be there yet. This is an immature team, in terms of balance. That hasn’t changed.’

And so that goes into the heads sitting according to Van ‘t Schip. ‘I can’t imagine that they don’t want to, but a lot plays a role and a lot has happened this season. That may be taken into account in the field, otherwise I cannot explain it. This team wants to, but is young. For most it is a first year at Ajax, for others it is age. With the pressure and the name that Ajax has, it is not easy to enter the field every time with a certain expectation.’
