In total there are about a hundred types of recognized awards in the Netherlands. Traditionally, the mayors award these ribbons during the ribbon rain. Such an award is a medal worn on a ribbon. Hence ‘the ribbon’.
The ribbon shower is always on the last working day before the king’s birthday. It is unknown when the very first ribbon rain in the Netherlands took place. This tradition probably started somewhere in the mid-19th century.
When will you get a ribbon?
There are no strict criteria for a royal award. In any case, someone must have ‘made a contribution to society in a special or exceptional way’.
These often concern people who have been active as volunteers for a long time – at least fifteen years – for example at a sports club or in church. Another category consists of people who have achieved ‘very special achievements’ in their daily work or secondary position. Consider, for example, athletes who have become Olympic champions.
