German MEP Matthias Ecke was assaulted and seriously injured on Friday evening. That happened when he was hanging election posters in Dresden. The politician from the left-wing SPD party has been taken to hospital and requires surgery.

Ecke (41) was allegedly attacked by four people. Shortly before, a 28-year-old employee of the Bündnis 90/Die Grünen had also been kicked and beaten while hanging posters. Local elections will be held in September in the German state of Saxony.

Authorities suspect one group is responsible for both attacks. Nothing is yet known about the motivations of the perpetrators.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s SPD reacted with shock to the incident. The party branch in Saxony said other campaign teams had also been insulted and intimidated while putting up posters. The attack on Ecke is described as an “unmistakable alarm signal” for all Germans.
