Negotiators from Hamas and Israel left Cairo again on Thursday, according to Egyptian media. Those involved tell the news agency Reuters that some progress has been made, but that there is no deal yet on a ceasefire in Gaza.

Top executive William Burns of the American intelligence service CIA is also said to have left the Egyptian capital.

US President Joe Biden said on Wednesday evening that his country will stop supplying weapons to Israel if that country continues the invasion of Rafah. According to the United States, an invasion of the city would not contribute to the goal of defeating Hamas.

Israel and Hamas do not sit down directly with each other. Egypt, Qatar and the US act as mediators. The Hamas delegation is now said to have returned to Doha for internal consultations.

Since the start of the war in the Gaza Strip, a truce has been reached once. That was in November last year. Then Israel and Hamas traded hostages and prisoners during a multi-day lull in fighting.

Negotiations under pressure

In recent days, negotiations on a truce have come under pressure. Hamas said it agreed to a deal that Israel said had “unacceptable” terms.

Israel responded by capturing the border post on the Gaza Strip-Egypt border and surrounding Rafah with tanks.
