The incident at the handball World Cup on Thursday evening is of course immediately reminiscent of Luis Suárez. The Uruguayan footballer made a habit of biting his opponent a few years ago and that is exactly what seemed to happen in the group match between America and Bahrain.
With a 21-19 score in favor of Bahrain, the stops seemed to go too far for Paul Skorupa. The American grabbed his opponent Husain al-Sayyad (35) very tightly and even seemed to bite him in the arm. The Bahrain player immediately showed his upper arm to the referee, who issued a red card, forcing Skorupa to leave the field.
After seeing the television images, there was even a blue card for the American. This means that the violation is so serious that a penalty can also follow after the game in which it was committed. Bahrain eventually won 32-27.
“I didn’t see it, but they say he bit him,” said American coach Robert Hedin after the game: “If that’s true, then that’s a red and a blue card.”
Luis Suárez bit Otman Bakkal, Branislav Ivanovic and Giorgio Chiellini between 2010 and 2014 in the service of Ajax, Liverpool and Uruguay. After his transfer to FC Barcelona, his bizarre behavior was over.
