John van ‘t Schip will no longer be Ajax’s coach after this season. The interim coach announced at a press conference on Thursday that he is in discussions with the club about taking on a different role.

It is no surprise that Van ‘t Schip will make way for another trainer after this season. He was appointed in October to succeed the departed Maurice Steijn until the end of the season. It is not yet clear who will be the new Ajax coach.

Van ‘t Schip is in discussions with recently appointed general manager Alex Kroes about the role he will fulfill. Before his arrival as trainer, the former international had already agreed with Ajax about a technical position.

“Alex is talking to a lot of people. We have discussed what could be the interpretation for the coming years. That will be in a different role. Not as head coach,” Van ‘t Schip said at his press conference.

“It has been clear from the start that I would do this until the end of the season. We all know that in football things can change, but this is not a problem for me.”

De nieuwe algemeen directeur Alex Kroes moet voor herstructurering binnen Ajax zorgen.

‘We will talk further at the end of this season’

Van ‘t Schip did not want to say much more about the role he will fulfill. The former attacker could only say that he is expected to sign a contract for several years.

“We will talk further at the end of the season,” said the Ajax coach. “There will probably be some discussions about things in between, but by then we will talk about it more substantively.”

Under the leadership of Van ‘t Schip, Ajax rose from last to fifth place in the Eredivisie. On Sunday, the Amsterdam team will play against Van ‘t Schips’ old club PEC Zwolle at 12.15 pm.
