Feyenoord had a festive premiere of the documentary ‘Kind van Zuid’ on Thursday evening at Villa Thalia in Rotterdam. ‘Kind van Zuid’ focuses on Lutsharel Geertruida, the 23-year-old defender who grew up in South Rotterdam as a young football talent and, as a child of the club, developed into one of the strongholds of the current Feyenoord 1. The documentary is available from Friday 29 March on Feyenoord ONE.

In the documentary of more than 45 minutes, the cameras follow Geertruida both on and off the field. His time at Varkenoord as a youth player of Feyenoord Academy, the first minutes for the main squad at the age of seventeen and the important defensive actions and goals he has made for Feyenoord 1 since then.

But also: growing up with his friends in and around ‘De Peperklip’ in South Rotterdam, his passion for music and improving his speech. The normally silent Geertruida, who speaks with his feet, makes himself heard on screen for the first time in ‘Kind van Zuid’.

“I am extremely honored by this documentary,” said Geertruida. ‘It shows where I come from, the steps I have taken to get where I am now and how deep my love for this wonderful club is.’

‘As a boy I always dreamed of playing at De Kuip and achieving success with Feyenoord. The fact that as a child from South Rotterdam I managed to make this dream come true means a lot to me. It proves that no matter where you come from, you can succeed if you work hard enough.”

‘That is not only the case in football, but also outside of it. Everyone knows that I don’t find it easy to talk in front of an audience, but just like on the field, I am also doing my best to improve in this area. I see this documentary as the next step in the right direction, and hopefully it will be an inspiration to children and adults who, like me, struggle with stuttering.’
