Points counting green jersey Tour de France

In the 2022 Tour, there are again two different ways to earn points for the green jersey. First of all, that is possible at the finish, where the first fifteen riders ride in the points. How many there are depends on the severity of the ride. There are more points to be earned for flat stages than for the tougher mountain stages. As a result, sprinters invariably come to the fore as possible candidates for this classification.

In addition, the organization has also created so-called intermediate sprints. These take place once per stage (not in the time trials) and the first ten riders ride in the points. When there are small leading groups ahead, the riders for the green jersey have to be alert. The number of points per intermediate sprint does not depend on the difficulty of the stage.

Flat stages (stages 2, 3, 13, 15, 19 and 21):
Finish: 50, 30, 20, 18, 16, 14, 12, 10, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4 and 2 points
Intermediate sprint: 20, 17, 15, 13, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 point

Hill stages (stages 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 14 and 16):
Finish: 30, 25, 22, 19, 17, 15, 13, 11, 9, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3 and 2 points
Intermediate sprint: 20, 17, 15, 13, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 point

Mountain stages (stages 7, 9, 11, 12, 17 and 18):
Finish: 20, 17, 15, 13, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 point
Intermediate sprint: 20, 17, 15, 13, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 point

Time trials (stages 1 and 20):
Finish: 20, 17, 15, 13, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 point

Favorite points classification Tour de France 2022

To compile this list, (former) editors of In de Leiderstrui were asked about their top ten to the question: “Who has the best chance of winning the Tour de France?” Each top ten was awarded points, according to the following sequence: 12 points for the number one, 10 for the number two, and so on with 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 point. For each rider, the total number of points received is converted into a percentage of the maximum number of points that can be achieved. This is indicated with the relevant riders. This will give you a better idea of what the odds are according to In de Leiderstrui!

10. Alexander Kristoff – Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert (19.2%)

In tenth place in our list is the Stavanger Bear, Alexander Kristoff† Four-time stage winner in the Tour de France, but never winner of the green jersey. At Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert, Kristoff, in the absence of Biniam Girmay, will be the sprinter in the upcoming Tour de France.

Kristoff is having a good year with victories in the Clasica Almeria, Scheldeprijs and the Tour of Norway, but was trumped by Rasmus Tiller of Uno-X in a sprint at the championship in his own country last week. Kristoff himself is also mentioned in that team for the coming year, but first he has to make the most of the sprints on behalf of Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert.

9. Michael Matthews – Team BikeExchange-Jayco (19.2%)

Michael Matthews won the green jersey of the Tour de France in 2017. A lot has changed between then (Team Sunweb’s farm year) and now: Matthews will have to sacrifice himself in the bunch sprints for his faster teammate Dylan Groenewegen this year, while he can take his chance in the hill stages.

Another question that is current in 2022 is the battle for promotion/relegation points. Will Team BikeExchange-Jayco use the sprinters Groenewegen and Matthews in intermediate sprints, while there are important points to pick up at the finish?

8. Ethan Hayter – INEOS Grenadiers (28.3%)

Favorites green jersey Tour de France 2022: Who can disrupt the Dutch or Belgian party?

In eighth place we have a possible Tour debutant: Ethan Hayter INEOS Grenadiers showed himself in the Critérium du Dauphiné and actually all spring one of the most consistent riders in the peloton. Hayter can drive very well against the clock, has a good sprint and also a very good punch.

This makes him a kind of mini-Van Aert, which he also proved in the Dauphiné. There, the young Brit, who has never raced a Grand Tour before, finished on the podium three times, eventually finishing 15th after a tough closing weekend. Good performances, which may therefore earn him a coveted spot in the Tour selection.

7. Caleb Ewan – Lotto Soudal (35.0%)

Favorites green jersey Tour de France 2022: Who can disrupt the Dutch or Belgian party?

Caleb Ewan is the second Australian delegation in this list, but for him the same applies as fellow countryman Matthews: his team is involved in a relegation battle and that includes stage victories (as many points as possible) and therefore no intermediate sprints. In terms of sprints, the course is not really made for the pure sprinters á la Ewan.

Nevertheless, someone with the speed of Ewan should of course be included in this sprinter’s list for the green jersey. If he takes three stage wins in week one, he automatically participates for green.

6. Peter Sagan – TotalEnergies (36.7%)

Favorites green jersey Tour de France 2022: Who can disrupt the Dutch or Belgian party?

Seven (!) times: so often knew Peter Sagan to win the green jersey of the Tour de France. For years, the Slovakian superstar of TotalEnergies was a man you could fill in with a pencil for the tights in Paris, but the proportions are slightly different in 2022. Even for Sagan.

Sagan struggled all spring, but suddenly showed flashes of his class again in June. Against expectations, he won a stage in the Tour of Switzerland, and then also won the national championship in Slovakia. In the Tour he will undoubtedly throw himself back in the sprints, but win the green jersey? His base is probably not strong enough for that at the moment.

5. Fabio Jakobsen – Quick Step-Alpha Vinyl (48.3%)

Favorites green jersey Tour de France 2022: Who can disrupt the Dutch or Belgian party?

Fabio Jakobsen On behalf of Quick Step-Alpha Vinyl, he is preparing for his first Tour de France and it is not surprising that he is given a place high in this list. The Dutchman won the internal competition with Mark Cavendish and will travel with Michael Mørkøv as pilot to the Tour de France, where he wants to ensure sprint victories in the first week.

Jakobsen, who already won green in the Vuelta last year, has in many cases proved to be the fastest sprinter this season. He won one or more stages in all stage races he rode (Valencia, Algarve, Paris-Nice, Hungary and the Baloise Belgium Tour) and he managed to win Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne. One or more stages in the Tour de France is the next goal, and then green comes with it. In the past two years (Mark Cavendish in 2021, Sam Bennett in 2020), Quick Step has already succeeded.

4. Mathieu van der Poel – Alpecin-Deceuninck (49.2%)

Favorites green jersey Tour de France 2022: Who can disrupt the Dutch or Belgian party?

In fourth place we find a man who will not go for the green jersey at all: Mathieu van der Poel† The Dutchman from Alpecin-Deceuninck will not be seen in the bunch sprints, but with his potential in the wind, on the cobblestones, in the punch arrivals and in the transition stages, of course he has the opportunity to take many points.

Van der Poel will normally help team mate Jasper Philipsen in the flat stages, but will have the opportunity to whistle nicely in the remainder of the Tour. Attack, fly in; that work has been devoted to the driver of Alpecin-Deceuninck, and then you can also participate ‘just’ for green.

3. Jasper Philipsen – Alpecin-Deceuninck (53.3%)

Favorites green jersey Tour de France 2022: Who can disrupt the Dutch or Belgian party?

Jasper Philipsen is therefore the sprinter on duty at Alpecin-Deceuninck. Last year he finished fourth in the points classification of the Tour, after six podium places. Three times third and three times second in a Tour stage, this season the victories should follow.

Philipsen has nothing to do with Tim Merlier, who won a stage in the Tour last year. Merlier will start with the team of the Roodhooft brothers and has not been selected for the Tour de France. All the balls to Jasper, who can just take advantage of that in the battle for the green jersey.

2. Mads Pedersen – Trek Segafredo (62.5%)

Favorites green jersey Tour de France 2022: Who can disrupt the Dutch or Belgian party?

In second place a man who does not hide his ambitions for this Tour: Mads Pedersen wants to score in their own country, that much is clear. The Dane has taken a good look at the time trial course in Copenhagen and wants to take a shot at yellow in the following days via the bonus seconds. Wearing yellow domestically, it would be historic for Pedersen.

The Trek-Segafredo rider is also someone who should also be able to get a lot of points in the remainder of the first week. Pedersen knows the game of the wind, is excellent on the cobblestones and climbs nicely for a sprinter. On paper, he could well be the fun-haul of the Dutch and Belgians in the battle for green.

1. Wout van Aert – Jumbo Visma (100.0%)

Favorites green jersey Tour de France 2022: Who can disrupt the Dutch or Belgian party?

The top favorite for green is Wout van Aertno doubts† The all-rounder of Jumbo-Visma makes a goal for the first time from the green jersey and the course of this Tour de France has been made on paper for the Belgian, who will be accompanied by some good servants with Christophe Laporte, Tiesj Benoot and Nathan Van Hooydonck.

In the two ‘mini-Tour de Frances’, Paris-Nice and the Critérium du Dauphiné, things went well: both stage races were won by Primoz Roglic, while Van Aert took the green in both races. If we follow this logic, there is not much for the competition to start against the versatile driver from Herentals.
