Jorien van den Herik has withdrawn his candidacy for the presidency of the KNVB, despite having gathered enough support. The former chairman of Feyenoord informed AD Sportwereld.

“I have spoken to many people in recent days,” said Van den Herik. “And it’s simple: it’s too much work.”

Van den Herik had put himself forward for the presidency earlier this month. To make this candidacy formal, ten signatures from voters of football clubs are required. Van den Herik said he had received this, including from top clubs Ajax and Feyenoord.

Business in America

For the 80-year-old Van den Herik, a possible chairmanship of the KNVB could not be combined with other work he has. Business obligations in America, among other things, prevent him from fulfilling the top position at the football association.

This leaves three candidates to become chairman of the KNVB. These are police chief Frank Paauw, who was nominated by the KNVB itself, former FC Groningen chairman Hans Nijland and D66 politician Jeanet van der Laan.

At the association meeting on May 27, it will be announced which of them will succeed outgoing chairman Just Spee.
