Daniëlle van de Donk and Damaris Egurrola reached the final of the Champions League with Olympique Lyonnais on Sunday, at the expense of Paris Saint-Germain. The score was 1-2 against the team of Jackie Groenen and Lieke Martens.

That victory was more than enough after the earlier 3-2 victory in the first match. With Egurrola and Van de Donk at the kick-off, Lyon got off to a lightning start. After just three minutes it was a hit. Left back Selma Bacha scored with a shot from distance after a short corner kick variation.

This made the task even more difficult for PSG, where Martens started on the bench. Just before half time, Tabita Chawinga brought back the tension in the diptych by making it 1-1.

In the second half, eight-time Champions League winner Olympique Lyonnais had the better of the game and had great opportunities to make it 2-1. It also almost received help from PSG goalkeeper Constance Picaud when she let a ball slip out of her hands. Egurrola just couldn’t take advantage of that.

The decision was made ten minutes before the end. Groenen lost a duel in midfield, after which Lyon came out of it very quickly. Melchie Dumornay was nicely released and her shot found the far corner: 1-2. Martens came on six minutes before the end, but was unable to change the score.

In the final, Lyon will meet FC Barcelona where the Dutch Esmee Brugts plays. The reigning Champions League winner defeated Chelsea 0-2 at a sold-out Stamford Bridge on Saturday, after losing the home game 0-1. Both teams also faced each other in 2022: the southern French won 1-3.
