Michael van Gerwen qualified for the quarter-finals of the Austrian Darts Open on Sunday. Gian van Veen and Danny Noppert also reached the last eight of the tournament in Premstätten, Austria.

Van Gerwen defeated Peter Wright in the eighth finals, without playing big. The three-time world champion barely got into trouble against the Scot and threw an average of 93.92 per three darts. Van Gerwen immediately broke Wright in the first leg of the match, but saw the global number 8 come back to 4-4.

However, ‘Snakebite’ did not give up in the tenth leg of the match. As a result, Van Gerwen, who defeated Jeffrey de Zwaan in the previous round, had plenty of time to decide the match. At match dart number three it was a hit for the Brabant darts player.

Van Gerwen will face Ross Smith in the quarter-finals, who defeated Raymond van Barneveld earlier in this tournament. ‘Mighty Mike’ has already won the Austrian Darts Open four times before.

Noppert gives finishing demonstration against Rock

Earlier on Sunday, Gian van Veen and Danny Noppert also secured a place in the quarter-finals of the Austrian Darts Open. ‘GVV’ turned out to be too big (105.20) for Richie Edhouse (98.93) and won 4-6 in legs against the Englishman.

Noppert defeated Josh Rock in a high-level match. The Frisian darts player won 6-3 and recorded an average of 102.12, lower than that of his opponent (106.50). Noppert was especially strong on the doubles: six of the seven attempts were successful.

Later on Sunday, Van Veen will face world number sixteen Joe Cullen in the quarter-finals. Noppert faces English teen sensation Luke Littler.
