Tallon Greek Spoor made it to the eighth finals of the Masters tournament in Madrid on Sunday. The Dutchman was too strong for top player Holger Rune in three sets on the Spanish clay.

After about two hours and fifteen minutes the score was 6-4, 4-6 and 6-3 in favor of the 27-year-old Greek track. He is ranked 25th in the world. The seven-year-younger Rune is the global number twelve.

“In terms of ranking, it is certainly my best victory on clay, but also in terms of tennis,” Greek Spoor said after his victory Ziggo Sports. “I haven’t played many good matches on clay, so it’s not that difficult. But this is one of the better matches. It’s a very nice victory on a very nice track.”

Due to his impressive victory, Greek Spoor will rise in the world rankings. How many places the Haarlemmer wins, of course, depends on how far he gets in the strong tournament and what the competition does.

Greek track meets top player again with Rublev

Greek track had started the prestigious tournament in Madrid with a somewhat difficult victory over the Japanese Taro Daniel. He now meets Andrey Rublev, number eight in the world. He defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina: 7-6 (10) and 6-4.

Earlier this year, Greek Spoor already faced top players such as Jannik Sinner, Hubert Hurkacz, Alexander Zverev and Alex de Minaur. The Dutchman did not win then, but was close a few times. He had already defeated Rune in Hamburg in 2022.

Botic van de Zandschulp also participated in Madrid, but the fellow Greekspoor is already out. He was no match for the Frenchman Ugo Humbert on Friday.
