The Chinese manufacturer Sipeed is working on a handheld game console containing a field programmable gate array-Processor. An FPGA processor has the advantage that it is programmable by users.

The console will have a 2″ LCD screen, built-in game controllers and support for external screens. The device will have dimensions of 100x50x15mm, with a 1500mAh battery inside. The company is also working on a slightly larger model with a screen between 3.5 and 4.5 inches.

The most striking thing is the processor, a so-called field programmable gate array. The ability to reprogram this has the advantage that users don’t necessarily have to use an emulator to play classic games. The Analogue Pocket uses a similar method, but with two FPGAs, to let users play Game Boy and Game Boy Advance cartridges. Sipeed’s handheld should soon also support Game Boy and Game Boy Advanced games. In addition, the device makes it possible to play NES, SNES and Game Boy Color games.

On X, Sipeed already shares some initial designs for the handheld. The company asks which material and color users like and whether they have any other suggestions. The appearance of the handheld has not yet been determined. What the device will cost or when it will be available has not yet been announced.
