Favorites stage 7 Giro d’Italia 2023 | Who throws his lasso at Gran Sasso?

--

For the seventh day in a row, the drivers have to complete a stage on Friday with the bike under their ass, but now the Giro will really start with the first uphill finish. In the Leader’s jersey tells you a bit about the stage towards the Gran Sasso d’Italia!

Route stage 7 Giro d’Italia 2023

In stage seven of this Giro d’Italia we enter the high mountains for the first time, although it will also be a long ride. With the start time of 11.20 am, the drivers have to have an early breakfast, knowing that a stage of no less than 218 kilometers has to be completed.

We can be very short about the first seventy kilometers: they are mainly flat, but that changes after that. The uncategorized Sannitico (14.4 kilometers at 4.6 percent) and then the Roccaraso (7.3 kilometers at 6.1 percent) are already causing some long-term consequences in the peloton, knowing that more than a hundred kilometers will follow .

After the top of the Roccaraso, a long descending line follows towards the foot of the final climb, which is actually 47 kilometers long. For the sake of form, the organization has divided this into the Calascio (13.5 kilometers at 6.0 percent) and the Gran Sasso (26.5 kilometers at 3.4 percent), but in fact the last fifty kilometers are constantly uphill.

Those percentages don’t tell the whole story either. While the Calascio can still be called quite regular, this does not apply to the dessert of the day: the Gran Sasso. This climb, with a finish at 2135 meters, can be called rolling in the first 20 of the 26 kilometers, but then it really starts to go up.

The last five kilometers are about eight percent on average, which is also partly above two thousand meters. It was precisely on these stretches, with the steepest stretch a mile from the finish, that Simon Yates distanced himself from everyone and everything in a similar ride in the Giro in 2018. Thibaut Pinot was second that year, while Chris Froome lost a lot of time in the Giro that he eventually won.

Weather stage 7 Giro d’Italia 2023

The riders will probably come out with mixed feelings on Friday. At the start it seems to be raining, but during the day the chance of torrential water decreases somewhat. In the first hours, the wind in this fully northerly direction is also from the back, although it does turn a bit during the ride. In the final phase there is therefore a chance that it will be partly sideways on the final climb. All this at temperatures of 20 degrees Celsius during the day, but about 5 degrees at the top of the Gran Sasso. There is also a chance of rain there.

The key question in advance will be: will it be something for the classification riders or the refugees? If we go by the winners of the last two years, the scenario would be one. Simon Yates (2018) and Marco Pantani (1999) managed to win at the time, which offers opportunities for, for example, Primoz Roglic. The Slovenian from Jumbo-Visma is an expert on longer climbs with a slightly steeper end, and should therefore feel at home towards Campo Imperatore.

For classification men like Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick Step), Alexander Vlasov (BORA-hansgrohe), Jay Vine (UAE-Team Emirates) and Hugh Carthy (EF Education-EasyPost) will be a bit confused after Wednesday’s crashes. Evenepoel and Vine in particular should be able to normally compete for the day victory, but then they must be completely free from physical malheur.

At INEOS Grenadiers, the motivation is already there. They came through the crashes well with their split Tao Geoghegan Hart and Geraint Thomas, while Pavel Sivakov, Thymen Arensman and Laurens De Plus also showed that they are okay. It is possible that this stage is a good opportunity for the British formation to play out the collective strength.

The same motivation will also be there Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ, already second on this climb in 2018) and Joe Almeida (UAE-Team Emirates), men who rode well so far this Giro. Also the Bahrain trident Santiago Butrago, Damiano Caruso and Jack Haig and BORA-hansgrohe-pawn Lennard Kämna normally know what to do with such a ride with a climb at the end. For pink jersey Andreas Leknessund (Team DSM) and number two Aurélien Paret-Peintre (AG2R-Citroën) it will be a matter of joining or dropping out.

Then the men who can try it from an early breakaway. Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates) and Ben Healy (EF Education-EasyPost) were overzealous in Tuesday’s ride, but ultimately couldn’t get away. They are now even more behind, which should give them space.

Since you really need climbers’ legs for this stage, the circle of favorites has been reduced somewhat. Matthew Rickitello (Israel-Premier Tech), Filippo Zana (Jayco AlUla), Bauke Mollema (Trek-Segafredo), Joe Dombrowski (Astana), Rein Taaramäe (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty) and maybe even Einer Rubio (Movistar) should be able to get some space though.
