Seven suspects, but no clarity yet about the death of Ahmed (15) in Enschede

Even more than three months after the death of Ahmed Krd Hsan (15), there is still no clarity about the circumstances of the fatal stabbing in the city center of Enschede. The police have arrested seven juvenile suspects, five of whom are still in custody. Several telephones have been ‘read’. Security camera images have been examined in detail and the police investigation now runs to a thousand pages. But what happened and who inflicted the fatal wound has not yet been determined.

Ahmed was walking through Enschede on Friday evening, December 22, when he was stabbed and succumbed to his injuries shortly afterwards. A 14-year-old friend was injured in the stabbing. He had to have surgery.

Ahmed, a minor asylum seeker of Syrian origin, was a student of the International Link Class (ISK) in Enschede. When he was walking through Enschede with his boyfriend (also of Syrian origin) a few days before Christmas, the two got into an argument with a group of young people of which the suspects were part. The reason for the argument is unclear. RTV Oost spoke to sources who stated that an altercation arose out of nowhere after offensive comments were made by the group of young people.

The suspects are said to be members of the so-called Noorderhagen group. This is a group of loitering youths who have been causing unrest in Enschede for some time and are allegedly guilty of drug trafficking, illegal prostitution and possession of weapons.

The detective team investigating the crime takes into account that the suspects knew where the surveillance cameras were located in the center, because the argument moved at a certain point to a place where there is no video surveillance.

The TV program Opsporing Verzocht paid attention to the stabbing in January. The investigation team announced that they were looking for an unknown man who had tried to calm the argument. The witness came forward after the broadcast and the police were able to speak to him. But whether this has provided more clarity about the motive and who did the stabbing remains unclear.

A first pro forma court hearing is scheduled in the case in a week and the suspects will appear in public. Perhaps there will be more clarity.
