Thousands of Dutch people received a royal decoration today. Eleven people were surprised today in the municipality of Hoogeveen, including two couples. A busy day for the new mayor Martijn Breukelman who pinned the decorations on almost all the decorated guests. So busy that deputy mayor Derk Reneman took action to pin up an award. All Hoogeven residents were appointed Member of the Order of Orange-Nassau.

The ribbon rain route started in Elim; in the canteen of the sports hall Marietje Benjamins-Ten Cate (55) from Elim child is at home. The warm-hearted Marietje is fully committed to sports clubs in the village. She has been involved with korfball club Elko in Elim for 47 years, as a trainer, member of the youth board and chairman.

She is also far from unknown at SC Elim and the SSS gymnastics club. She is known for her caring. As the owner of snack bar Royal in Hollandscheveld, she brought snacks to nursing homes during corona times and arranged vouchers for the holidays. Marietje is also a rock for the family. Especially in difficult times, she has impressed with her indomitability.

Willem (75) and Willy (78) Giethoorn from Tiendeveen thought they were on their way with their daughter Hermieke to a festive anniversary of their son. That stopover at De Rank, the building near the reformed church on the Drostenraai in Noordscheschut, seemed so innocent. It is a well-known place for the couple. Willy is sexton of the church and president of the Passage, Nieuweroord-Noordscheschut department. Willem has been a volunteer at this church for 34 years.

The couple feels very connected to Noordscheschut, Willem grew up there as a teenager. Willem is also treasurer of the De Cirkel village hall. Perhaps the couple is better known as the owner of the mobile supermarket and before that Willem was the milkman in the area. Willy was of course also intensively involved in the company. Willy and Willem are both jacks-of-all-trades with a great commitment to the community.

Questionnaire

In what place Anneke Pol (73) from Hoogeveen getting her ribbon pinned on was not that difficult: the Hoogeveen library. Since 2013, she can often be found there around the Verhalenwerf exhibitions, but also for photo viewing days and genealogical information afternoons.

Anneke, like her husband Jan who received a royal honor last year, is very interested in the past. She is a source of information in the field of old Hoogeveen and genealogy. She was a board member and later an editorial board member of the Genealogical Association, a board member of the Historical Society, an editorial board member of the Veenmol, a volunteer at Tourist Info Hoogeveen and does much more. Deputy Mayor Derk Reneman presented Hoogeveen residents with the decorations associated with the royal award.

He is a numbers man: Jan Reinders (75) from Hoogeveen . Until February this year he worked at NNO accountants in Hoogeveen. But he also uses his knowledge for numerous associations and foundations. In his speech, Mayor Martijn Breukelman said: “A number of things strike me in all the volunteer work you have done.

An interest in history, love for the church and passion for managing finances. The people you worked with also noticed this. You are therefore praised for your efforts, expertise and enthusiasm.” Reinders was treasurer at the Prinses Beatrix riding association and pony club, the Diaconal Platform Hoogeveen and the Stichting Beheer Kerkelijke Gegebouwen Noord-Nederland, De Schakel, Oost district municipality of PKN Hoogeveen and he had many more voluntary positions. As a member of the Reformed Church Hoogeveen, he advises people on tax and administrative issues.

Serving others

The ribbon caravan drove on to the Valkenstede where one was surprised Jozina Altena-Veldhuis (68) from Hoogeveen was distinguished. The committed Hoogeveen resident has dedicated her life to serving others. She is a supervisor in disability care at Cosis, where she cycles with residents every week.

She was also involved with the Red Cross and the Lotus Association. Jozina has an eye for the local community, as evidenced by her commitment to neighborhood associations and school activities. Jozina is also a first aid volunteer and instructor. She trained thousands of people.

Also involved in first aid, but in Zuidwolde Han Kaemingk (69) from Hoogeveen . He has been treasurer since 2016 and provides information about resuscitation and AED equipment. Han was awarded in the De Weideblik district building, where there is also an AED.

A well-organized civilian assistance network is very important, according to Retired Corporal of the National Reserve. He is therefore registered as a citizen aid worker with the Hartslag Nu Foundation. Since 2013 he has been a member recruiter and later treasurer of the Our Volunteer Association National Reserve Corps. Since 2017, he has been committed to the Walk For Life Foundation and has also been a volunteer at the Veterans Search Team Foundation for a few years.

At Brasserie Van Eigen Deeg on the Hoofdstraat Henny Schonewille-Zwiers (84) from Hoogeveen surprised by a visit from Mayor Breukelman. For her tireless efforts, she was decorated as a Member of the Order of Orange-Nassau. Henny has been a volunteer at Treant for over 35 years.

She organized numerous activities at the Weidesteyn nursing home. In the Bilderdijk residential care center she helped with workshops, lectures and coffee mornings. She has also been active with the Hoogeveen mixed choir Con Amore since 1986. Her volunteer work for the Reformed Church in Noordscheschut began in 1991, including as a committee member dealing with the Church-Israel relationship. Her caring for people and even their ailing plants is appreciated.

Surprise at home

It was full house just after noon Cor Koopmans (75) from Hoogeveen . As sharp as Cor is, the family felt that the surprise effect had the greatest chance of success if he was caught off guard at home. After the mayor suddenly appeared at the door, the guests trickled in.

Cor has been active within the Hoogeveen Historical Circle since 2006. He is currently busy coordinating the move to the Irene building and renovating this building. He also wrote dozens of articles for the association magazine De Veenmol, gave lectures and organized a history quiz. Cor also provided information and guest lectures for the Dutch Transplant Foundation for many years. He did this as an expert by experience, because he himself underwent two liver transplants.

Presentation at Visio

At the end of the tour, Mayor Breukelman was able to delight a second couple with a royal decoration: Coby (81) and Roelof (85) Keuning-Stel from Hoogeveen . He did this in the new building of Visio ‘t Hooge Hof. Coby and Roelof have been volunteers there for 25 years. Not a monthly social afternoon passed without them and they accompanied many an outing.

Coby also still offers a helping hand with Phihezo’s sports activities. She was involved in the Alpha courses on faith, and together with her husband she is a church volunteer at the Philadelphia Foundation. Roelof also supervises residents of the Cosis residential facility, with whom he also cooks. Finally, he is also a board member of HSV Het Vette Baarsje. He is considered an expert in Hoogeveen fishing.
