American journalist Evan Gershkovich remains detained in Moscow for the time being. That reports Associated Press Tuesday. The Russian court rejected his request to lift his pre-trial detention.

Gershkovich was arrested in March 2023 during a work trip in Yekaterinburg. According to Russian authorities, the The Wall Street Journaljournalist caught espionage. No evidence has been provided for this. The United States condemns the arrest.

The journalist’s pre-trial detention has already been extended several times. The date was recently moved to June 30. Previously there was talk about harsh conditions in the prison, but based on new images that seems to be not too bad. Gershkovich looks relaxed and well-groomed in court.

The parents of 32-year-old Gershkovich are from the Soviet Union. The journalist has been writing about Russia for more than five years. He was working on an article about the attitude of the Russian population towards the Wagner group. That mercenary army fought on the Russian side in Ukraine.

Gershkovich denies that he is guilty of espionage. He could be sentenced to a maximum of twenty years in prison.
