Morocco is committed to expanding its highway network and modernizing the road network. Several large-scale projects have been or will be implemented to transform the country by 2030, the year the kingdom will host the World Cup together with Spain and Portugal.

With 1,800 kilometers of highways already constructed, Morocco is the leader in the Maghreb and number two in Africa. But the kingdom aims higher. Rabat wants to use the organization of the 2030 World Cup to increase this number to 3000 kilometers.

In an interview with the newspaper Les Inspirations Eco Minister of Equipment and Water Nizar Baraka emphasizes the important projects that are or will be implemented within the framework of a well-developed plan. This year, his department is investing more than 13 billion dirhams in the development of its infrastructure, to support national and sectoral strategies and to guide the country in its ambitions and in dealing with future challenges. According to the minister, the Moroccan road network accounts for 90% of passenger transport and 75% of freight transport. The National Scheme for Road Infrastructure until 2040 serves as a compass for the development of the road network.

One of the projects is the new Casablanca-Rabat motorway, which extends over 60 km with a total estimated cost of 5 billion dirhams. Another large-scale project is the express road to the south, which consists of the doubling and widening of the national road N°1 over 1055 km between Tiznit and Dakhla with a total investment of about 8.8 billion dirhams. There is also the construction of the road and motorway link of the Nador West Med port, a project aimed at connecting the industrial port complex to the national motorway network from the Fez-Oujda motorway for a distance of 104 km. The investment cost is estimated at 7 billion dirhams via the Guercif-Nador motorway.

The ministry also plans to upgrade and modernize the road network, build and maintain rural roads with the cooperation of the regions under the Regional Development Programs. A budget of more than 15 billion dirhams will have to be released for this.
