Young orca released from shallow lagoon in Canada after weeks of struggle | Animals

--

In western Canada, a young orca managed to escape from a shallow lagoon after about five weeks. The calf ended up there with its mother at the end of March. The mother orca died after becoming stranded.

The orca and her calf were spotted by coastal residents on March 23 in a lagoon near Zeballos, western Canada. Experts believe they ended up there accidentally during a hunting attempt. The remains of a seal had been found.

The mother orca was stranded in a shallow trough. Attempts to free her were unsuccessful. The calf continued to swim nearby. The animal’s cries for help were heard using underwater microphones. For a long time, local residents also feared the fate of the young orca. The animal would not be able to find enough food in the lagoon’s water, which is too sweet.

The calf’s captivity was big news in Canada. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the situation “heartbreaking.” The young orca has been fed additionally in recent days. Plans were also in place to catch the calf if necessary and transport it to deeper water. At its peak, at least fifty people were involved in the operation to save the orca.

Earlier on Friday, however, the animal managed to reach the high seas under its own power thanks to high tide. Experts hope that the calf will now be able to rejoin his pride.
