At least four people in the US state of Oklahoma have been killed by tornadoes that hit the area over the past 24 hours. Dozens of people were injured and about 30,000 people are without power, Gov. Kevin Stitt said at a news conference.

The village of Sulphur, with around 5,000 inhabitants, was hit particularly hard: dozens of houses and businesses were largely destroyed there, as can be seen on images from the air. “You can hardly imagine the damage,” Stitt said. “Pretty much every business downtown has been destroyed.” About thirty people were injured in the village.

The tornado started in a park and slowly moved towards the center of the village. Tornadoes also caused damage in a number of other areas in the state. A state of emergency has been declared in twelve areas in the state. There were also tornadoes in the state of Nebraska on Sunday.

Sunday was the third day that parts of Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas and Illinois were under a weather warning.

In addition to heavy wind gusts, heavy hail and tornadoes, the area is also experiencing heavy rainfall, which means there is a high risk of flooding.
